I think the easiest summary is, the most "bookish" experience will win out in this niche.
The Kindle is very different from the iPad, as noted -- the latter of which seems better suited to your needs as a graphic designer. Though, if you intend to do any actual drawing with the thing, I'd recommend investing in a sausage.
